In the trickiest part of the climb, Noakes is transferred onto a wooden cradle and slowly lifted onto the base of the plinth. Still giving a running commentary, Noakes reaches the 18ft-high statue of Admiral Nelson. Astonishingly, he had to repeat the death-defying stunt because the sound recordist had not picked up his commentary.
Right, now all he has to do is get down To the rhythm of the band of the Royal Marines, the boys shinned up the ft mast in formation, spreading out along the spars and hanging from the rigging. Naturally, Noaksie had no intention of staying on the ground.
